The October 2008, there was another of the Motor Show emblematic of Europe: Paris. Fernando Alonso was able this Saturday to a perfect lap at Monza National Autodrome, Italy, which helped him get his first pole position as a Ferrari driver.

And he did it in the plaza of the Italian house. “It was a pleasant surprise,” said Alonso. “This was a great achievement of the team, we showed that we are fast,” he added.

The world champion McLaren Jenson Button will take the other spot in the front row after scoring just one tenth of a second ahead of Alonso. Be the first time in the last 23 races of the British long between the first two.

Alonso and Button need good results in Sunday’s race to stay in the fight for the title.

Brazilian Felipe Massa, of Ferrari, and Mark Webber of Red Bull will occupy the second row, while championship leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren will start fifth.

Sebastian Vettel was ranked sixth in his Red Bull, the team that won the pole for 12 of the first 13 races of the season.

Alonso, who did not complete the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks ago by a collision, was located in an excellent position to score points.

“Tomorrow we need a podium, at least, to stay in fight,” said Alonso, who won at Monza with McLaren in 2007. “There is great pressure to win the race, but know we can not afford to not finish.”

Button used a streamlined system that gives opportunities to add points to reach Hamilton, who won in Belgium after his McLaren teammate was taken out of race by a collision with Vettel.

“It is very important. I have the trophy at home and want to stay there,” said Button. “Things changed very quickly for us at Spa (and) I think everything can change very quickly here.”

Hamilton has 182 points, three ahead of Webber. Vettel is third with 151 and has a tough task on Sunday to have his worst qualifying of the season. Button is next with 147, six more than Alonso.

Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes was ranked seventh, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg Williams and Robert Kubica of Renault, while Rubens Barrichello 10th decamp Williams.

Michael Schumacher will start from the 12th position in his first race at Monza since winning his fifth title of the GP of Italy for four years.
