Our ML 270 CDI arrived, a shiny metallic black from head to toe, with a mileage of actual delivery on the clock – so we were able to assess exactly how a “real” owner would feel having a fair distribution take
one of Mercedes’ Smart sport utility vehicles. It was a very pleasant experience, and has continued to improve with each of the 800-mile test, we added during the test a week under very pressure.
While the M-Class offers a capacity of first-order all-terrain – Thanks to a reader full-time four-wheel and the state of the art 4ETS traction system – it is primarily intended for use on road and as such complies with all standards expected of a passenger car Mercedes-Benz. It is a great way of driving comfort on the road, especially over long distances.
And when it comes to the versatility of its daily high towing capacity (3,500 kg) and cavernous 2,020 liters of cargo space with the ability to adapt to any indoor event, generous fuel tank 83 liters and consumption impressive fuel together make it difficult to better. The LMA, in fact, seems to have all bases covered, being equally in its element on an output off-road, family vacation or a regular activity or shopping.
The current line-up ML offers a choice of five, six or eight cylinder engines (2.7, 3.7 liter V6, V8 4.5 and 5.5 liter) that grow up from 347bhp de163. Lighthouse 55 AMG is a real model flyer, reaching 145 mph and 62 mph arrow in less than 7 seconds. However, the most popular model, weighing in at a not unreasonable £ 31 715, is 5-cylinder 2.7-liter common rail diesel 163bhp ML. ILC 270 of 295 pounds of muscle ft torque will push up the speed quite usable up to 114 mph and 0-62 mph dash is sorted in a lively 11.4 seconds. It is tested here equipped with Mercedes’ excellent ‘Tipshift’ Transmission 5-speed automatic also learns your driving style.

Three large dials take care of the water temperature / fuel and outside temperature, speed and tricks. The graphics are white on black background with orange needles. The fascia is housed in an orderly style with the redesigned center console housing the satnav and apparatus for key rotation automatic climate control dials and the excellent two-stage heated seats. The selector of the lower console houses the switches, four windows (all one-shot auto up / down), central locking and master of the finger pad mirrored doors providing electric, heating and car to withdraw. Both consoles are trimmed in Eucalyptus attractive. The cupholders neat pop-outs are a cut above the rest.
Standard equipment is comprehensive. Tinted windows, automatic climate control, all-electric windows, smart 17-inch alloy, roof rails, cruise control, six airbags, headlights and windshield wipers of a car head long list of useful objects. The cabin exudes a solid chip
the guy who looks not only today but which will retain its good looks year road.
Turn the key in the ignition and there is little to give the fact that you’re sitting behind a diesel engine. Cruising along at 75 mph on the highway your passengers would not have a clue. With £ 295 m
of torque on tap, the Turbo line five feels undernourished. the mid-range acceleration is strong, the rich get taken low for a smooth drive. Publication stair is impatient – especially welcome when joining the movement of traffic – and the 270 CDI Brisker feels official 0-62 mph time of 11.4 seconds would have you believe.
And with a combined consumption of 29.7mpg there is little penalty two pedals automobile. Yields 6-speed manual only 3mpg addition, 30mpg. It appears that diesel engines become more sophisticated these days, it is more difficult to make a case for choosing a thirsty petrol engine. Despite many efforts at our pricing one-week trial, the ML returned an impressive 30mpg overall. Another bonus is the largest fuel tank. Now 18.26 gallons, up 15.4, it means that 550 square miles between visits is something you can count on, given the LM consumption 35.3mpg achievable on tour.
Refinement is also good. Cabin tasteful ML is a relaxing place to be with a spacious, please break. Mercedes has done an effective job with the engine noise suppression with a shield mounted on the bottom helps to put 90 mph cruise at 3,000 rpm. However, even then, the ML is always eager to press three digits. A growly, but lovable, Soundtrack lets you know when you’re really working with four valves per cylinder engine with common rail direct injection.
Safety is, of course, the highest on the agenda as the quality of Mercedes. Intelligent two-stage “airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags are more standard with side impact bags window large enough to inflate the entire length of the inside to protect occupants’ heads.
In addition, it has traction control, stability control, ABS with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake force braking with the added security of four-wheel drive.

Ride comfort independent suspension set-up is comparable to that of a Mercedes sedan and although it is a diesel, the ML 270 CDI is certainly far from boring to drive!
In spite of City looks the M-Class is a competent 4×4, complete with a “real” transfer case with low rates. Unlike off-road, the ML avoids locking differential to distribute torque to all four wheels, relying instead on Mercedes advanced four-wheel electronic traction system, 4ETS – a derivative ABS system, electronic traction control. The wheels lose traction immediately braked and the torque re-directed to only the traction wheels.
The result: L. Copes admirably off-road. Preparation is simple: choose neutral, click Low Range next to the radio on and off the electronic stability program. The ML will be happy to climb over difficult terrain climbing 1-in-1 slope, ford 50 inches of water depth and clearly has a greater off-road capability than most owners will never need or use.
Decent cabin space means there is easy access and enough space for
real adults in each seat of the ML. Front and rear head and legroom are generous. Long (Are we ahead-yet?) Travel confirmed that the large, leather seats are designed for comfort. The center console houses all kinds of switches, logically arranged. A rod-RECT entary on the steering column runs the standard cruise control and speed limiter form – useful if your New Year’s resolutions include keeping a clean license. Seal Discerning includes eucalyptus wood.
Rear passengers also enjoy their own air vents and control dedicated fan-tion, and a wide, comfortable center armrest. The two outer rear seats are contoured with a back angle that makes them sound particularly comfortable. The 1 / 3: 2 / 3 split rear bench Hosting Odate-three, offering a three-point seatbelts and head re-straints for each of them. Folding the second row seats standard directly into the ground is fast and easy and opens a gap at intrusion without charge with a payload of 695 kg and a capacity of 2,020 liters measuring 1651 mm long x 1,112 mm wide x 1015 mm high.
Even more useful, the two sections of the seat can be moved – together or separately – up to 80 mm front / rear legs to instantly increase or luggage space. Loading could not be easier. Fluctuations over the entire width of the top-hinged tailgate and the road effortlessly, and the floor is conveniently in the knee.
Although the ML is only 4.64 meters bumper against bumper – 18cm shorter than the E-Class estate – it offers its passengers more space to move. Note also that the rear seatbacks are reinforced with metal sheets, not only to provide protection against projectiles upon impact but also to a platform higher load when the rear seats are completely folded. If you
necessity, then a third row of seats option will transform your ML in a working group of seven seats.
The luxury cabin ML hides some serious capacity Workhorse -
towing capacity braked trailer-3500 kg. With its prodigious torque peaking at between 1,800 rpm and 2600, the LMA is an ideal choice for homeowners who want to take a boat, a horse box or trailer substantially.
When you set eyes on an M-class no doubt that it is, above all, a luxury SUV. Equally obvious, after accumulating more than 800 miles in a week knows the imperturbable calm of the ML as it conducts its business, is that life very capable workhorse under the veneer of imposing, imbued with many small touches that go a long way to make something special property.
